2011 Celebrity Wedding Trends

Happy Wedding Wednesday!

2011 was a year of many "talked about" weddings -- first on the list is, of course, Kate Middleton's wedding to Prince William. Then, there's the Monaco Royal Wedding. Another royal who got married was Prince William's cousin, Zara Phillips. And then among these royal weddings, there's Reese Witherspoon and Jim Toth's March wedding and Kim Kardashian's wedding to Kris Humphries.

These celebrity weddings sparked a lot of wedding trends, as TresSugar so kindly enumerated for us.

Here are 6 of those 10 wedding trends:

1. Festive Fascinators - Although I am sure fascinators have been around for quite some time, I think the Duchess of Cambridge made them stylish and fascinating again (okay, sorry, I just had to use "fascinating" to describe fascinators, haha!).

My favorite out of these is the one she wore to christen a boat in Wales.

And of course everyone wore fascinators to the wedding of the year
(or maybe I should say wedding of the century):

Victoria Beckham, Tara Palmer-Tomkinson, Zara Phillips, Princess Eugenie, and Princess Beatrice

Here is an example of one you can buy from www.hatsnstuff.co.uk:

2. Sisters-Only Bridesmaids - The Duchess of Cambridge made her sister, Pippa Middleton, her Maid of Honor.

Kim Kardashian did the same thing, making her sisters, Khloe and Kourtney, her Matron and Maid of Honor.

3. Dripping in Diamonds - The Duchess of Cambridge wore a Cartier Halo tiara borrowed from her Grandmother-in-law (aka The Queen) and diamond earrings - a gift from her parents.

Duchess Catherine's cousin-in-law, Zara Phillips, also wore a tiara and diamond earrings.

Kim Kardashian joined in with the royals - she wore a diamond wraparound headpiece and diamond drop earrings.

For those of us who don't have relatives to borrow tiaras from (or sponsors to lend us diamonds like Kim Kardashian), there's Jennifer Behr! :)

Arielle ($1250) and Agnes ($498)

4. Nonbridal White - Again, Duchess Catherine started this trend when her sister, Pippa, wore white to the royal wedding.

Prince William and Pippa Middleton - Royal Wedding Party at Westminster Abbey

And again, Kim Kardashian copied her... okay, I'm gonna be nice, she borrowed the idea. All her sisters wore white, and she asked her wedding guests to wear either black or white.

I think Kate and Pippa Middleton did it right because it was just the two of them wearing white as opposed to Kim who had all her sisters wear white dresses (plus her mother and some of her guests!)

I don't know, I guess I'll wait to watch Kim's wedding special to see if the black and white thing worked out okay.

5. Costume Change - The Duchess of Cambridge wore another Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen creation for their evening reception hosted by her father-in-law, Prince Charles.

Princess Charlene of Monaco, on the other hand, changed into a Giorgio Armani Prive evening gown for her wedding reception.

6. Splash of Color - Reese Witherspoon tied the knot in a pink Monique Lhuillier wedding dress.

Here are two colored wedding dresses from Shopbop, if you want to follow Reese's lead:

Marchesa V Neck Full Skirted Gown ($4950) and Catherine Deane Giselle Gown ($2050)

  5. I think that I must be the only person on the planet that didn't really like Kim Kardashian's wedding! She is so pretty - it would have been nice to see something much simpler? Kate and Reese get my votes! I also love those little tiaras from Jennifer Behr!

  10. I love Kate! My Mom's dress was a very light pink(rose color I suppose)...She got married in the 80's. She got a lot of flack from her religious friends, though.

  11. About the only thing I don't agree with is other people wearing white in the wedding party. It just seems weird to me.

  14. I don't like Kim period. It's mainly coz she did bad stuff like porn, playboy, w and cried about it and blamed everyone else. Maybe she's a hardworker and an opportunist. Good for her u know. :) she has great taste in fashion but she can also be so tacky in her choice. She can never be a royal though her mom chanted this is our royal wedding version at kim's wedding . Well ya I read it from somewhere. People will forget her but the royal wedding will be talked for centuries to come coz they are well, royalties ESP British. People won't say Princess Kimberly but people will know who Pincess Catherine of England is. Don't like Kim's headpiece I don't know reminds me of Cleopatra. Her white wedding dress is so pouffy and gaudy yet normal. Seeing Princess Catherine's wedding on TV at 2 am brought tears in my eyes but looking at kim's over the top wedding in the mags made me go eeeeekkkk she's a pretty woman on her wedding day but she didn't take my breath away like Princess Catherine did. That woman is so graceful and in a different class than Kim. Just my opinion..

  15. Erin-- yay, i'm glad you loved it! and i agree, it was very refreshing how kate did it. :)

Meghan-- you are most definitely not alone! i am not in awe of kim's wedding! i actually thought it was tacky. i wish she went with something simpler.

    nyanzi report-- yup!

Dolls Factory-- i like her, but it's just so sad how she doesn't seem happy at all! :/

Rosie-- i agree, kate's dress is perfect!

    Erika-- it's such a cool idea! :)

ellie-- i love kate too! and aww, they didn't know your mom was starting a trend! ;)

Krysten-- yeah, it does seem kinda weird, but i do like how kate and pippa did it. :)

    hivenn-- thanks!

goodbadnfab-- aww, thank you! and yes, i will check out your blog. :)

Miss L-- i love her dress too!

Punctuation Mark-- agreed! she's like the ultimate bride. ;)

MsRinz-- i totally agree! i didn't like kim's headpiece either, it makes it obvious that she's trying too hard. and i really wish she went with a simpler and classier wedding. and gosh, i hate it when they call her wedding america's royal wedding -- it's not!

  33. Fabulous post Mimi! I always love your posts, they're so interesting! My favourite wedding by far was Catherines. Both of her dresses were amazing, but I loved the lace neck and sleeves on her wedding dress. And I agree they did it much better having only the two of them in white!

I'd love to have a fascinator. They're so cute. I just have to figure out where I would wear it to. :D

  40. Great post Mimi, I was reading through and analyzing each look, hehe. And I liked a lot of aspects of each and I think it would be so fun to wear a hat like that to an event. I'm going with Kate Middleton's as my fave because I think it was so classy the way her and Pippa were the only ones in white..but I'll definitely be watching the Kardashian wedding special in a few weeks. hehe. Have a good weekend!

  41. Dale-- yes, the middletons sure did it right! and yeah, even though i am not at all in awe of kim's wedding, i will still definitely watch her wedding special. have a good weekend too! :)

  42. Great wedding post. I have to say nothing is better than the royal wedding. :) I mean, it's the royal wedding!

Kim Kardashian's wedding wasn't that fab from the pictures I saw. For someone who spent so much money, I expected a glamorous wedding. I also think the idea to make all her sisters wear white too just didn't work out. :/

Oh gosh, I want the Arielle Jennifer Behr headpiece. Too beautiful. <3
